Nudist Resort Seeks New Members

O’ LAKES - Paradise Lakes, the clothing-optional resort off U.S. 41, has held nude road races, screened “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and hosted a strip poker tournament to attract new members.

Now, the nation’s largest nudist resort by membership is offering its members luxurious incentives to draw more people. The resort hopes to gain 1,000 members by the end of July; it currently has about 4,500.

For new-member referrals, current members will receive a $50 membership renewal credit and will be eligible to win a clothing-optional cruise for two from Athens, Greece, to Venice, Italy.

The 10-day, 170-passenger cruise, hosted by Bare Necessities Tour & Travel of Austin, Texas, will be Aug. 27 to Sept. 6. The grand prize, worth about $8,000, includes air fare to the port.

“We’re always looking for creative ways to increase membership, and we thought our best ambassadors are folks who are already members here,” said Pete Williams, director of communications at Paradise Lakes, who also is co-host of “The Fitness Buff,” a weekly radio show broadcast at the resort.

“We always get referrals [from our members], so we figured why not incentive-ize them with a fabulous cruise.”

Williams said this week that at least 100 new members had joined since the contest started. The grand-prize drawing will take place once 600 new members are signed up.

Williams said the membership drive comes at a time when nudist resorts across the country are making concerted efforts to gain new members.

“Membership has been sort of flat across the board,” he said. “Nude recreation, by all measuring sticks and surveys, is on the upswing, but studies suggest people are joining less and less of everything, whether it’s a country club or Kiwanis Club or whatever.

“We’re a time-crunched society.”
