Tenants seek panel’s help over rent dispute

The tenants of a building in Abu Dhabi have sought the help of the Rent Disputes Settlement Committee in Abu Dhabi to prevent the landlady from evicting them with the alleged intention of renting out the apartments to others at a higher price.

Hazem Shouqi, a representative of the tenants, said, “We were shocked when the new real estate agent sent us a notice saying that we need to deal with him directly. The landlord has hired the real estate office to run the building and rent apartments at higher amounts.”

“The manager of the real estate office offered each tenant Dh10,000 to vacate the apartment. When we declined the offer, we saw water seeping into our rooms. When we asked for maintenance, both the landlord and the real estate agent refused to cooperate. The real estate agent has intentionally done that to force us out of our flats,” he alleged.

When Khaleej Times took the case to Ibrahim Firahat, secretary-general of the committee, he affirmed, “The landlord has no right to increase the rent by more than 7 per cent. So long as the tenancy contract obliges the landlord to make maintenance, he should comply with the law. Likewise, the real estate agency has no right to evict tenants. The tenants have their full rights under provisions of the new tenancy law.”
