South side condo could slip into creek

Beech Grove - Michael and Donna Alexander bought their south side condo in The Timbers development for its natural tranquility. The condo is perched above Lick Creek, but now, their home is suddenly in a precarious position.

“This creek, this beautiful Lick Creek has just about got us licked,” Michael said.

The earth here is washing away, and the Alexanders fear their condo could be next to slide down this slope.

“We’ve already moved our furniture to the front of the house, and I’m standing here looking over my shoulder nervously because I think it could happen,” Michael said.

Because of recent development to the north, Lick Creek, which acts as drainage for the watershed, has taken on more water.

A few months ago, the Alexanders noticed the hill above it was shifting, especially after a hard rain, and now, erosion is so severe that much of the bank has completely caved in.

“The edging has given away because it’s all hollow underneath there. It’s almost like a cavern,” Michael said.

“I don’t know where it’s going to stop. Looks like to me the next step is a few more trees and the deck,” said Donna.

Adding to the frustration, the Alexanders can’t determine who’s responsible for fixing the problem. They’ve called the state, the city and even the Army Corps of Engineers.

“They’re all concerned, but nobody seems to be doing anything,” Michael said.

The Alexanders fear if something isn’t done soon, it’ll be too late.

“It’s just a matter of time before this goes, and so goes our condo,” said Michael.
