The Kansas City Council on Thursday approved The Cordish Co.’s plans for a condominium-hotel tower in the Power & Light District.

The proposal, which includes as many as 350 condo units and a four-star hotel northwest of 13th and Walnut streets, on the block formerly occupied by a Jones Store Co. department store, will seek public financing.

An application will be filed with the Tax Increment Financing Commission of Kansas City. The commission’s recommendation will go to the Kansas City Council for a final decision.

Mayor-elect Mark Funkhouser, who takes office Tuesday, wants the city to be more accountable for how it uses TIF. Funkhouser also wants the city to adopt an incentive policy before granting new incentives, and he expects to appoint new TIF commissioners. The mayor names and the City Council approves six members of the TIF board, whose other representatives come from other affected jurisdictions.
