Frigid, blustery day chills condo construction workers

“This is like a slap in the face.”

That’s how Dave Ziomkowski, One Ludington Place construction project manager with McGraw Construction, summed up the tumbling temperatures this week.

Ziomkowski said the weather was a tough change for the construction crew from Rich Construction of Fremont, who — just days prior — were working in T-shirts doing roof construction on the third condo building.

“This week threw my schedule back about a week,” Ziomkowski said.

The Rich Construction crew was working on the roof, four stories up, and exposed to the fury of winds howling off Lake Michigan. The worst part of the weather over the last few days was the wind.

“It’s not the cold, it’s the wind,” said Rian Hall, of Fremont. “It really takes it out of your body.”

He said there’s no choice but to deal with the weather.

“We all carry our gear and bring extra gloves and socks,” Hall said. “Our paychecks depend on the weather. If we don’t work, we don’t get paid.”

Hall said the nice weather at the end of March was a nice break from the extreme temperatures earlier in the year.

“Oh, man — you always look forward to a break in the temperatures,” Hall said. “It’s a little bittersweet once you get a taste of spring. You get days that are nice and warm, but you always expect days like this.”

The crew hoped to have the roof done by the end of this week and start shingling by early next week.

The current project is the third of a four-phase condo project.
