Condo, shops planned for downtown Grayslake

Up to 70 condominiums and retail shops are a step closer toward reality for Center and Whitney streets in downtown Grayslake.

Village board trustees recently gave informal approval to provide special-use permits so Vernon Hills-based JMH Architects Inc. can develop the project.

Redevelopment is planned at 201 Center St., where a 107-year-old deteriorating building would be torn down. Grayslake’s police station, next to the condemned building at 33 S. Whitney St., also would be demolished for the project.

Grayslake Mayor Timothy Perry said the 70 condos and retail space would fit with the village’s comprehensive plan for downtown.

Trustee Shawn Vogel said at a recent village board meeting he is enthused with a proposal to create in-building parking for the condominium residents.

“The whole thing is very exciting,” Vogel said.

Grayslake taxpayers became owners of the dilapidated structure at 201 Center after the village obtained it for $750,000 through a condemnation proceeding in Lake County court in 2001. Perry said the condo-and-retail project would return the property to the tax rolls and produce revenue for Grayslake.

Plans call for the police department to move to a new station connected to village hall on Seymour Avenue downtown. That is expected to occur next year.
