Cricketers assured of safety after gas leak in hotel

Port of Spain (Trinidad &The four teams that are here for the cricket World Cup have been assured of their safety by the local police chief following gas leak in their hotel Wednesday.

Representatives of Pakistan, South Africa, Canada and Ireland teams staying in the Hotel Hilton have met acting Police Commissioner Glen Roach, who has assured safety for the players. Some of the players were in the hotel when the gas leaked Wednesday.

‘The safety and security of the players and officials for the tournament is of paramount importance and we continue to work with the appropriate authorities to this end,’ the World Cup organisers said in a statement here.

The 16-nation World Cup begins Sunday with the opening ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

‘The law enforcement agencies in Trinidad & Tobago have indicated that the incident was not directed towards any of the teams and additional policing has been put in place on the property.’

The Canada and Ireland squads were in the hotel and were on their way to practice, the organisers said.

Matches in the 49-day tournament will start Tuesday.
