So. Fla. Condo In Mezuzah Dispute

A tenant in a Florida condominium says she believes she is the victim of religious discrimination because she has been told to remove a mezuzah from her door.

The mezuzah is a small case containing a religious scroll. Laurie Richter, who rents an apartment in The Port in Fort Lauderdale, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel observant Jews are required to fix them to the door post.

She said she used double-sided tape to fasten the mezuzah without damaging the door post. But she was told that association rules ban anything from being fixed to exterior walls, doors windows or balconies.

Richter said that during the Christmas season many residents had wreaths on their doors.

“I don’t want to be causing any rifts here so Christians can’t hang wreaths, but it seems the rights of Jewish people are being violated because Christians don’t have to hang wreaths but we have to hang mezuzahs,” she said.

Art Teitelbaum, area director of the Anti-Defamation League, advised Richter and the association to try to work out their differences.
