Six families were displaced when a pipe leading to a sprinkler system burst in a condominium complex at 207 First Street about 6:30 p.m., said police Sgt. John Stillwell.

The management company of the condominium got in touch with a representative from the fire suppression company to send an emergency crew out to try to fix the problem, Stillwell said.

The families were taken in by other residents in the complex whose homes were not affected by the water, Stillwell said.

The system was turned off and the company is attempting to repair the broken pipe.

Friday’s frigid temperatures may have caused the pipe to burst, Stillwell said. No water flowed out of the building on to the roadway and it all was contained inside the building, Stillwell said.

The fire department assisted in using special equipment to vacuum up much of the water from the units. The last fire truck left the scene about 9:30 p.m., Stillwell said.
