Officials will try to end condo dispute

A Brighton City Council subcommittee will meet Saturday with a developer, attorneys and condo owners to attempt to resolve an 18-month dispute over alleged substandard conditions at a Brighton condominium development. The development is being built by Advance Craft Home Builders, owned by Steve Davis.

Owners of some units in the Northridge Hills development on the city’s southwest side have encountered problems such as patios and deck posts sloping downward toward a detention pond. The slope is eroding and settling because the soil was never compacted when the condos were built, engineers have confirmed. However, both the city’s and developer’s engineers say it poses no safety problem. The owners have also complained about poor landscaping and cracked curbs, among other deficiencies.

After hearing a report from City Attorney Paul Burns on terms of a pending agreement with Davis on Jan. 18, council members said they need more input from residents.

The council voted to form a three-member subcommittee to meet for as long as necessary Saturday until a resolution is achieved. The subcommittee is composed of Ricci Bandkau, Jon Stoppels and Jim Muzzin. Also attending will be three city staff members, three representatives from the condo owners’ group, Burns and Bill McCririe Sr., attorney for the developer. The 8 a.m. meeting at city hall will not be open to the public.
