The ski resort at Russia’s 2014 Winter Olympics candidate city Sochi was closed by the local authorities because of poor safety equipment, Reuters news agency reported Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Economy Minister German Gref briefed Russian President Putin in Sochi on the resort’s readiness for the visit of International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors, planned for February. Putin, who personally backed Sochi’s bid, often skis in the Krasnaya Polyana (Red Meadow).

It is reported that a regional court has given the order for the resort to be shut down after inspecting technical, medical and fire equipment.

“The Krasnya Polnaya resort near Sochi has not been operating for two days,” Kommersant newspaper wrote. “On Monday all the lifts, restaurants and cafes at the resort were closed.”

The other two remaining candidate cities for the 2014 Winter Olympics are Salzburg in Austria and Pyeongchang in South Korea. The IOC will announce the host city in Guatemala in July.
